GSF 201: Facilitator Training

Facilitator Training

Our most popular training course, you'll be provided with an in-depth, comprehensive training on the SMART Recovery 4-Point Program, the SMART Recovery tools... and MORE! The "Get SMART FAST" (Facilitator And Support Team) GSF 201: FACILITATOR TRAINING course is designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge of SMART Recovery and its 4-Point Program for you to proceed capably, comfortably (and authoritatively) in your role as a SMART Recovery meeting Facilitator.

It's a requirement of all our meeting Facilitators—whether face-to-face or online—to complete this training course, where you’ll review the various video presentations, reading materials, complete training exercises and review activities, and the training segment quizzes entirely online. All of the materials are provided online within the course itself, so there's no additional purchase of materials required.  Click here to view the full Course Syllabus & Outline.

Note: If you are located outside of the US or Canada, please refer to the SMART Recovery International website for information on reaching out to your country's affiliate for training information.

Course Information

Upon registering you'll receive a confirmation email containing your access and account information, so you'll be able to get started right away.

The training is entirely self-study (with exception to the optional "live" online training meetings described below). We’ve estimated the “self-study” portion to take approximately 20 hours to complete, which is done at your own pace and at any time convenient to you. The only deadline is all of the training coursework needs to be fully completed within the 180-day enrollment period, which begins upon registration.

During your training, we encourage you to join in on the "live" ongoing training and support online meetings we have available for our trainees, our meeting Facilitators and all of our SMART volunteers. These meetings are available for your attendance on an ongoing basis and are scheduled for 60 minutes, taking place online using the Zoom meeting platform. Meeting dates and times are found in the "Upcoming Events" block and in the course calendar.

FAST Forward: Get SMART FAST is a "training" meeting divided into two parts. The meeting starts out with "SMART Recovery in Action", being an interactive role-play where a scenario is presented for discussion and the application of the SMART Recovery tools. The focus of the role-play is on how you'll utilize the SMART tools and apply what you're learning to help and support the person presenting the issue. After the role-play exercise, the remaining portion of the meeting will focus on "Leading an Authoritative SMART Recovery Meeting", being an open discussion and Q&A session where we'll discuss and address any questions and concerns you may have in moving forward with your SMART meeting plans.

FAST Forward: SMART MEETING MANAGEMENT (SMM) meetings take place each weekday at various times. If you are interested in furthering your skills in managing your meetings or smoothly handling any challenges you might encounter, these discussion meetings are for you. Discussion topics include difficult and sensitive issues that may arise in meetings, best practices and techniques in using the SMART tools, following meeting guidelines, creating an accepting and non-judgmental meeting environment, and how to "Do SMART Recovery”. It’s also a place to brainstorm ideas and share information and resources.

When asked to submit their evaluation, past participants have continually given the training high marks, finding it to be extremely helpful and beneficial to their preparations in bringing a SMART Recovery meeting to their local area or facility.

Upon satisfactorily completing the coursework and meeting the training requirements, a completion certificate is issued.
